I phoned a colleague yesterday morning and could hear the birds in his garden. Very clearly. Found out he is keen on birds as well

Yes, I particularly noticed the dawn chorus this morning. I'm assuming that I hadn't heard it for a while, which made this morning noticeable. There's still a lot of bird song going on now.

Which bird's song is 3 high notes, then 3 lower notes a bit faster? I must spend more effort learning bird song!

Three repeated notes tend to be Song Thrushes, then they change to a different set of 3 (or 4)

Thrush do the repeated refrain thing. I tend to think song thrush are better at it than mistle. Fragments that almost sound like they're broken, or which can't be repeated are mistle (usually). They're often right on the top of a tree. I've heard several mistle this 'spring' but haven't heard a song thrush yet
On a related topic the local bird group is reporting singing skylark! Oh, and I saw two buzzard today soaring over a copse, which suggests courtship to me

Stef, my missus, has been working outdoors in the Stafford area (close to Cannock Chase), and has heard skylark this week too

I don't think it was a song thrush unless it had a really limited repertoire. It might have been a chaffinch but im not really sure.
