I was in Madeira at the weekend for the Funchal Marathon and thought I might be able to see a few different birdies towards the aim of 200. Not much joy, all were species that I would hope to see in the UK in time. On Sunday I was relaxing after the race and looked up to see some swifts. I won't add them to the list just yet, adding them in the UK in the summer will be much sweeter.

Swift might not be my favourite bird but they're in my favourite one . . . with a nod to Brian Clough

Seeing as others have done so, here's the birdwatch results from the Cambridge jury.. Blackbirds x2 (Mr & Mrs Owen) Robins x 2 (Little & Brave) Goldfinch x 5 Double Dunnock action Blue tits x 2 Great tit Fat collared dove Fecking huge wood pigeon Song thrush - first time ever seen in the garden and just happened to be during this hour! Maybe the ground clearance hasn't caused too much short-term disruption to the regulars. (Surely you mean Brian Chough DT?) |

Good run Becca (just nosed at your profile etc!) Aiming for 200 species..impressive! You on a yearly list? Swifts have a special place in my heart too-when my son was born, a long time ago, Swifts were everywhere outside the hospital. My garden bird watch then: Blackbird 1 House Sparrow 6 Jackdaw 1 Robin 1 Dunnock 2 Blue Tit 2 Coal Tit 2 Long Tailed Tit 2 Feral Pigeon 4. Like you flanker, Song Thrush is rare in my garden too, only see one maybe three or four times in a typical year--and I watch daily as part of the BTO Garden Bird Survey. |

Chuffing good pun that flanker I don't know if mentioned but the Bradford birders reported 'our' first oystercatchers of the 'spring' last week Also I went to a meeting on Sunday and agreed to do some wader surveys (curlew is main interest) for our village Environment Group |

Thanks steve45, I was lucky enough to be 3rd lady, as it was a small race and a tough course. I am keeping a list now. No idea if I can get to 200 without some concerted effort.

Is it just me or was the dawn course in your area raucous and loud? Or is it I'm in the office when the course starts. It was lovely to hear this morning. |
