Nuthatch call always reminds me of a frantic duck quack on helium. Well it helps me to remember it anyway!
A couple of years ago I got to the last weekend in October before spotting my first nuthatch of that year. Most years I see and hear dozens of them, I never did work out why 2014 was such an odd year.
Last night's really cold snap completely changed the behaviour of our garden birds at the feeder this morning. It was all-out warfare at one point! Our resident male blackbird (affectionately known as Owen) was getting well stuck into a very distinctive new male, easily recognised by being black *everywhere*, even down to the tip of his bill, and Little Rob (yep, a robin) and the Double Dunnocks managed to chase off the quarrelling starlings between them. And while all that was happening, the little blue tit snuck in for a big beak full Suddenly the battle for resources gets serious...

My online research has uncovered quite a debate about whether the black bills are Scandinavian/German migrants or just first Winter males. I never knew it was such a hot topic! Wherever he is from, he's certainly handsome
I'm on the look out for Scandinavian robins too...

look out for Siberian Chiffchaffs too..a fair scattering of them around the country. ..BB's and Robins are well worth looking out for..but I've never managed to see any! Continental Robins are a bit paler than our British (sub species) Robin with a less bright red breast. They are also more shy than our friendly birds. Half a dozen Bullfinches this morning, Heron, Cormorant and plenty of mist and frost.

I had a pale robin over the summer. So pale I wasn't sure if it was a robin. I assumed it was summer plumage and would be brighter in winter
