I just caught a group of 30 or 40 pinkies heading away SW but which must have pretty much come straight over our house. All about bird sound today (I heard the pinkies first, hence going outside) because I heard then saw a dipper singing loudly earlier on the river Worth

We saw an unusual looking wagtail that Merlin identified as a white wagtail, but on looking it up I see that there's a world of debate about how distinct the species are and whether they're common in the UK or not.

Yeah, I've been wondering about this lately. Seems the Pied is a sub-species of the white. I had a pied recently that Google Images said was a white.

Seems Pied are UK specific with White in Europe, but coming over as visitors, but yes I think there is a bit of discussion around it so I don't know what is correct.

Simple answer is they are all Motacilla alba, local names are confusing, and subspecies are of no interest to me!

People are posting radar images showing huge numbers of birds leaving the Netherlands last night, heading our way.

And also... WaxwingsUK posted "...CONFIRMED SIGHTING. 25th Oct: one at observatory - North Ronaldsay (Orkney)..." yesterday.

Lots of pied wagtails flirting in and gathering on the roof of our town hall. They usually roost in a nearby tree.

Seems to be a lot of berries on the trees this year, so I hope that translates to plenty waxwings.

Today on my cycle; a meadow pippit and 3 singing skylarks.

The bushes in front of my front window have been ravaged. Though they are predominantly blackberries so it’s not a surprise. I can’t remember so many eaten last year though.

There were wrens, blackbirds and robins having a gander through them this morning. Doubt they will have found much other than cover.

That’s exciting about the waxwings. Will remember to take my small binoculars out with me. Saw a siskin yesterday and a dipper enjoying multiple baths in the river.
