Time of young for juvenile birds passing through. Beautiful peachy colour breast. Longer bill than dunlin. Great bird

Sat by the Thames here in my usual kingfisher spotting spot. Nothing doing yet but am watching juvenile black-headed gulls dive for and catch small fish. It’s something the terns do but is that a normal skill for a bhead gull?

The swifts are gone btw 😕

Bizarre experience today. I heard a bird ‘chirping’ and thought sparrow-like, but not sparrow, or chaffinch-like, but not chaffinch. The Merlin app said chaffinch :-O The song was one note. 20 minutes later and in a different area I had the same sound and same response from the app

The Merlin app also allows you to play stored sound files against each bird to help with ID.

We had a bird come up last week - just a single note - and it came up as chiffchaff, which surprised us. But the exact same sound matched against a file on chiffchaff.

Third chiff down on the app list sounds like mine. I’m not convinced

That's the next question(s).

Are they right? Can you send feedback to the app?

I hear Chiffchaffs making that single-note call, or Merlin tells me I do.

I was grateful to it on holiday as it helped me identify some stonechats flitting in and out of some clifftop hedges, and some linnets high up on a telephone wire above a field.
