Nice one ff. I’ve just been out with Tuss and we have a dead feral pigeon and a speckled wood butterfly to report only

I’m on Mull. Came mainly for my son to get the otter spots and got loads of them for him. Golden Eagles remain elusive but 1st time today for me to see the male Hen Harrier. Wow, what a bird, almost ghostly as it hunted across the marsh land. Brilliant. Loads of swallows, house and sand Martins here. Given that it’s 14C, 40 mph winds and generally pissing it down you’d think they’d head off home 😂 |

A small group of swift spotted yesterday south of Skipton along with a red kite. The swifts were there still on my return

lots of noisy geese flew over and woke me up at about 6 this morning, not awake enough to see which way they were going or ID them

Heard some more swifts again last night in Billingham. I've seen at most two in Darlington all August, but definitely seen and heard many more simply as close as Stockton/Billingham.

Not birds, but millions of heather flies / red thighed St Mark's flies (Bibio pomonae) on the moor today. Stopped the bike on the road going across a (shot, grouse) moor, and there was just a continuous swarm over the heather in all directions. I read something that suggested they only had big emergences every 3 years, but that might just be Norway. I've never seen them like this. Their larvae must feed hundreds of waders and red grouse. I hope they annoy the shooters tomorrow! |

After saying goodbye to my local swifts a few days ago, I saw some today in a village on the north Norfolk coast, so they're still here in places.

Got the Golden Eagle at the last gasp today but not on Mull, circling over a very busy A82 only about 10 miles from Glencoe. Managed to frantically pull in to a lay-by where all the picknickers / instagramers thought we were quite mad!! Back to reality tomorrow. There were a lot of swifts over Windsor when we left, hope that they haven’t departed in my absence. |
