Hardly any butterflies in Bristol or when I’ve been up in the highlands. A few peacocks in Moray and, weirdly, a tortoiseshell in my log cabin in late February which came in with the dried washing.

We’ve got a steady hum of bees in the garden in urban Bristol on our flowers late into the evening and also noticed the same in Moray on my uncle’s lavender.

Sad times for insects generally. I almost welcome the midgies and other nibblers in the highlands.

Just chiming in with the noticeable lack of insect, here in Flanders too. All the flowering plants in the garden are on a delayed schedule, and the lack of sunshine/ copious amounts of rain def. hasn’t helped anybody but the slugs and snails (who mowed over our emerging dalias and glass gem corn 😡) The wild flowering plants were also later than usual.

A lot fewer bugs sticking to the windshield of the car, even on longer drives. And our car hasn’t got suddenly more aerodynamic than it was 12 years ago… No amount of insect hotels can revert that, humanity needs a different approach to diversity loss I think.

There was a tern feeding over a lake I run past this morning. I've can't recall ever seeing one before, certainly not around here. I watched it for a couple of minutes, swooping down to take things from or just below the surface. It seemed to be on it's own.

A young jackdaw on next door’s roof come out of their chimney, have a look at the outside world and decide it’s not fledging time yet

Cat hand another bird yesterday. Any ideas for keeping it away from the garden? No idea who it belongs to.

New garden bird for me just now, chiffchaff hopping around in a bush. Hear them all the time singing in trees a little way off but that's the first time I've actually seen one in the garden.

Two separate male bullfinch on my walk tonight. That's 4 this year. . I have seen one a couple of times each year for the last 5 years or so, before that only one ever, nearly 30 years ago. Are they getting more common?
