The car windscreen test is undoubtedly a valid one. But isn't it also the case, though, that modern cars are much better designed to be streamlined, so many of the flies which would otherwise have hit the windscreen are now being deflected over the top instead?

Sad news from my front garden. The wren's nest outside my front door has been destroyed by something, I presume a magpie or maybe jay. Nest debris on the ground. Really sad, as I'm sure the chicks must have been about to fledge. I know it's all part of nature's cycle, but it all seems very harsh.

In an urban garden you don't expect to have oystercatchers flying over but a couple did thus afternoon, piping away.

I haven’t heard any of my urban oystercatchers since those 3 consecutive days the other week. I was as surprised as you. Maybe a similar dispersion then.

HowFar?
The pair of greenfinch that I saw on the bird feeder in the spring seem to have had a productive time. Three greenfinch fledglings are being very noisy on the railing just outside my classroom window.

Lovely, HowFar! As mentioned before here, we've had a very successful nesting record here this year, marred only by the sad wrens' nest raid.
