A really scruffy buzzard yesterday with a few missing primaries. It’s the time for moulting birds

My trip to the local heath last night was a great success! Wasn't certain that nightjars were still to be found there, as the last time I was out looking for them there must have been 15 years ago, but was reassured to come across a couple of other birders there who told me they were pretty reliable. Nothing happened until quite some time after sunset, then the churring started up, and before long there was churring all over the place, maybe 6-7 birds. Then one flew close by, great view. A bit later, as we walked back towards the car, two came flying close by, best views I've ever had, and then we heard one doing the wing-clapping.

I also saw a couple of woodlark (this is one of their known haunts), and got a lovely view of a yellowhammer in glorious yellow singing away rather quietly, about 25 metres from us. One of the other birders pointed out a hobby but I didn't see it in time. Then a fallow deer came bounding across the path in front of us.

Red Squirrel
Female pheasant crossing the road in front of my bicycle with 3 chicks. Got off the bike and carefully looked into the undergrowth where one looked up at me and peeped. I moved away quickly.

More siskins.

Plenty of swallows and their nests about.

Heading back to the big city tomorrow - urgh.

Nuthatch pair on the feeders today, followed not long after by a mob of starling young uns again.

Very baby moorhens on the canal suspect second lot.

Also had to do a slight canal detour via the train station because the swans and signet were on the path looking very menacing and they've already gone for us once this summer. Not falling for that again 😂

Disturbed a green woodpecker from the grass while walking the dog. It flew up a short distance and sat on a nearby fence post enabling me to take a good long look.

Juvenile GSWs coming to my window feeders now. Unaccompanied, unless parents are lurking nearby.

Bit of an altercation in the field behind us today, a large gull (don't know which) attacking a couple of rooks, feathers were flying!
