I've had several good barn owls the last few weeks, far more than usual. Hoping this is a positive sign for them, rather than just me being lucky.

Sadly I'm seeing far fewer barn owls than I used to. I was just remarking on this today to Mrs J2R on the way back from the coast.

We're now getting a great spotted woodpecker visiting the sunflower hearts feeder pretty well every day. It's always amusing watching while it's on the feeder because the tits and goldfinches keep on flying down and almost going on to one of the other perches before thinking better of it and turning around. I've not seen one bold enough to try to actually share with the GSW, but neither are they just sitting in the nearby branches until it's free. It's almost as if they don't realise it's a GSW until they're almost there.

I guess they really are pests but it was fascinating watching a flock of 10 rose ringed parakeets land on a winter flowering bush today and strip it of flowers. It is a prickly bush with holly type leaves and stalks of yellow flowers.

I'm no expert - I thought these were siskins, but from the song and comparing the bird with Merlin app I think they are serins.

Where was this, NordRunner? You don't really get serin in this country. I've seen them in Bulgaria but never here. I agree with DT, though, they don't really look like siskin.

Correction: I see that a couple of pairs a year have been breeding in small areas of the south east in recent years. Didn't know that.

For some reason Merlin likes to throw in Serin at regular intervals despite their rarity in the UK but then again it keeps telling a friend of mine that it can hear a Bluethroat which is similarly rare.
Also Nordrunner is i think based in Norway which is even more outside their range than the UK as far as I can discover.
