Morning folks - trying to identify a call. Can anyone help?
It rang out twice about 01:00 in the morning. A clean boop-boop-boop-boop high call, almost like a laugh. We are urban here and by a railway line with trees. When I look on line I can see I posted about this type of call on the RSPB site a few years ago with no definite answer. Does any owl have that type of call? It didn’t have a “big” sound. Felt close and like it was from a thrush-sized bird or smaller.

Yes!!! Got my waxwings in the end! Rare Bird Alert had an alert from earlier this morning saying about a little flock in the science park on the edge of town, so I ran out there, not hopeful because a couple of hours had passed since the alert. But they were there still, and obligingly perched at the top of a tree in glorious sunlight. I counted 20 of them. And, miracle of miracles, I had my binoculars with me!

This lot weren't especially vocal, Curly45. But when I've heard them before I've certainly liked the cool noise they made. Reminded me of sound-effects from a 1950s sci-fi film.

Unfortunately I can’t put my phone out of the window as the window’s blocked by a wardrobe. Downside of wrangling with butcher’s shop that backs on to our garden and stops us sleeping with noisy machinery running all night. Hence being awake at 01:00.
It was so loud, even with double-glazing shut and wardrobe in front of window. Going to have a listen to little and other owls now and will report back.

Had a listen to long-eared owl! One of its calls would really s**t me up if I was alone in a forest. I’d have to run.
