I'm pretty sure I heard a blackbird singing a couple of days ago, but I don't suppose it could have been, could it? I got the impression they shut up shop in July and don't start singing again until late winter / early spring.

Warm sunny spring-like days can trigger confusion. It's like the chiffchaff singing again autumn

Talking of similar confusion, is it possible to confuse birds with a headtorch. There's clearly a rookery near my home. It's absolutely pitch black up there though a dirt track which leads to a couple of homes, but whenever I run with headtorch I seem to set them all off chattering as if it's dawn already. I've occasionally purposefully turned off the headtorch for that section (to not disturb them rather than experimental), and there's no noise.

Nice Instagram post from Derbyshire Wildlife Trust on corvids. Always useful for nature lovers to have a bit of info on the old crows ;-)

Hooded Crow extremely localised vagrant in Derbyshire; usually confined to High Peak. Actually, that might be me :-O

Interesting, DT, didn't know you got hooded crows anywhere in England. Yes, they're just a local variant of the carrion crow. Or is it vice versa? I seem to recall seeming both of them together some places, so the ranges overlap.
