I think that in some ("irruption") years the local numbers are high, and they are joined by continental birds, and they turn up in every patch of conifers in the country, trying to find food. So, basically good breeding years, here, or on the continent, leads to food shortage, and lots of movement looking for every feeding opportunity. Or alternatively, cone failure on the continent... I was trying to see when the last big Common Crossbill irruption was, but can only see 1962/63, 1982/83 and 2002; nothing since. It must be 2002 I remember. Most of the stuff online is about that time when 40 Parrot Crossbill turned up in Shetland, or some other twitcher twaddle. |

2002 I had 4 children under 8, a job and a husband in Hong Kong - I’m not surprised I didn’t see any crossbills!

The parrot crossbill was the only twitch as such I have been on. Had only just got into bird watching. Was more excited about finding a Goldcrest myself on the way back to the car. (First time I had seen a Goldcrest)

On its own? Poor thing, they normally have lots of friends 😕 Big influx of goosander on the canal in the last couple of days, got to love their funky heads 😍 |
