I think the mipits were all on my bit of the moor today 😀 Also treated to a male wheatear, a pair of stonechat, plentiful skylark and the sound of a curlew. I spent a minute stalking a black bird in case it was a ring ouzel passing through (not unknown in these parts) but it turned out to be a regular blackbird. |

Something about your grebe encounter doesn't feel quite right Minnie Mad - GCG are very clumsy on land so to be perched in a tree would be out of character. Also, their plumes and ruff are more to the side and top, rather than the back of the head. Could it have been a cormorant - upright bird with a long neck a bit heronlike, perches in trees and dives? |

I suspect the cuckoo will be very grateful it's still somewhere warm and not in it's usual spot today.

Not only heard but saw a cuckoo today! Only second time I've ever seen one. Flew fairly close across our path then sat a top a rather bare tree, calling for some time. Also today, pair of wheatears, grouse, lapwings and a curlew. (North York Moors) |

One swallow tonight. Followed by at least two more. No cuckoo (I have heard one where I was in previous years). |

A pair of bullfinch in the bush in front of the bungalow this morning. Then then I saw my first local swallows of the year this afternoon. No cuckoo here yet either.
