We’ve got a couple of jays nesting nearby. I always think they’re quite exotic really. |

Lovely Winniefree Your post reminds me of an article I read recently about a British family who had lived somewhere overseas for a while (I forgot where, sorry) but then moved back to the UK. One evening one of the young children, too young to remember the UK from before, ran excitedly into the room to tell Dad all about the amazing bird on the lawn. Dad, amazed that any bird in the UK could rival the beautiful, exotic birds they had grown used to overseas, went to the window to find out what rare and amazing bird had alighted on the grass. It was a magpie Brilliant white and glossy black, iridescent colours of green, blue and purple gleaming in the evening sunlight. A luscious long tail and amazing beak. We'd do well to really *see* our native birds once in a while, not just glance at their familiarity and move on... |

Couldn't agree more, KinkyS! Even the humble starling is amazing when the sun catches it, with such iridescence. And goldfinches, ubiquitous on our feeders, are stunning.

I've been seeing loads of goldfinches recently, even in our garden which is rare. I will use them as an excuse for my crop of dandelions which they seem to be enjoying
