Just had a brief visit from a bird I couldn’t identify, didn’t get time to get a photo. It was upside down on the nut feeder - much as a nuthatch does- brown/grey back with strong wing bars - like a female chaffinch but smaller and more warbler shaped. It then flew to the nearby tree and looked at me head on - very streaky buff/cream breast - corn bunting style. I wondered about linnet or redpoll but no red anywhere that I saw. The nearest I can come up with from the books is tree pipit, but that seems unlikely. Any ideas?

HellsBells a female Linnet doesn't have any red on it and is smaller than a Chaffinch (a Tree Pipit is about the same size and the environment and time of year would both be surprising). 1st winter and female Lesser Redpoll only have small smudge of red on their forehead but I think you would see that head-on. Based on your description I'd suspect Linnet I think?

ff's conclusion makes sense.
Afraid a corn bunting as a reference point didn't help much given it's a bird I've never seen and not sure I'd identify if I did.

Female siskin or redpoll would be my guess. Both are small upside down feeders.

Dropped into Leighton Moss after a race on Saturday, just in time for the last bit of daylight. Some nice harriers, including a female who was channelling her inner osprey with a really white head, and a life tick of Garganey (I thought I'd seen one before but have no record!)

Thanks folks - Youngest, who is my usual go to but was unavailable this afternoon, also concurs with linnet. If it was it’s a garden first

Dozens of swallows refuelling over a boating pond in Barcelona, one house martin among them and hundreds of parakeets. A solitary mallard duckling with mum and a greylag gosling with both parents who were chasing a very unconcerned dog!
