in non-bird related news, much excitement on the Nith as an otter makes an appearance. Not sure if it's one of the two we had over the spring and summer last year but great to see.

Yesterday my run included a lap of Stover Lake which is always busy with ducks/swans/coots/moorhen/grebe etc. I saw two men with very fancy cameras and I assumed they were twitchers. Thinking I could get to see a rare bird visitor I stopped to ask them and it turns out they weren't twitchers but there to photograph the daybreak/sunrise and were raving about the light.
Last time I did that run I saw 2 pairs of mandarin ducks but yesterday there were at least 10 pairs, so pretty.

Robin and starling singing their hearts out. I saw a striking jackdaw, it was partially leucistic with the outermost wing feathers on each side completely white.

As I look out into the garden, I can see blue tits, great tits, goldfinches, a chaffinch, a robin and a collared dove. A greater spotted woodpecker has just left.
What does my return to the RSPB say for my hour this time yesterday? One solitary goldfinch. And that's it!

The big shock for my birdwatch return was getting an even number (two) of Dunnocks, three would be a much more normal count for them 😂
