Yes, DT, the arrival of the swifts is a joyous time. I've had a very long and very tiring and stressful day, and just spent some time lying back in the garden looking up at the swifts and listening to their screeching, and I feel better for it.

Another new summer visitor today - Arctic tern fishing in the river on my local run.

Rosehip
Middle England rural walk today, so before the heavens opened I was accompanied by skylarks, lapwing, red kite, kestrel, various finches, warblers - a whitethroat seen sitting on the oilseed rape but I couldn't properly ID the other one or two I could hear and caught glimpses of.
Then my first sighting of swift for the year :)

No cuckoo anywhere yet though.

Baby starlings getting fed in the trees behind my garden. They are seriously loud, non stop all day. Multiple families.
4 lapwings flying tonight (either that or far away Nazgul, i always think that's how they look flying)

Very busy Willow Tit here this morning. I don't often get them on the feeders except in winter but this year there were a pair that hung around longer than usual. Now after not having seen them for a few weeks one is making repeated visits to the feeders this morning. Looks like we have young Willow Tits close to hand.

Nice one FF :)

When I got a cat, I stopped feeding the birds. Not fair on either!
A few years later, I got new neighbours. We decided to no longer cut the hedge, native, previously laid, theirs. It has made a HUGE difference to birds and butterflies and god knows what else :)
The cat isn't allowed out at this time of year: too many birds nesting and fledging!
The blackbirds were feeding their pretty large fledglings right in front of my feet yesterday when I came home :)
