Hi ,
It looks like you're using an ad blocker.

The revenue generated from the adverts on the site is a critical part of our funding - and it's because of these ads that I can offer the site for free. But using the site for free AND blocking the ads doesn't feel like a great thing to do, which is why this box is so large and inconvenient. Some sites will completely block your access, but I'm not doing that - I'm appealing to your good nature instead. Did you know that you can allow ads for specific sites, whilst still blocking them on others?

Thanks,
Ian Williams aka Fetch

LSW is a great tick ff. I’ve never seen one. Tree pipit up there with garden warbler as a ‘birders bird’

ff, lucky you! I've never seen one either. Or at least, not a definite sighting.

I was fortunate enough to be with a good guide (his spot of a pair of Crossbills today which I forgot to include in the previous post was worth the small cost alone) which certainly helps but even he, who makes his living as a full time guide, said he hadn't seen one in the UK for at least the last 3 years. And it felt a real privilege for it not be a quick glimpse and "I'll take your word for it". It was a proper good look at it's plumage, size etc. and association of the visual image with its call. I suspect though it may be a long time before I see another.

Lovely, not something I've ever seen.

A first for me today, with the help of the Birdnet app and checking on the sounds when I got home. A grasshopper warbler, didn't get to see it, but such a distinctive sound, never heard anything like it before. The best I could describe it is a bird trying to imitate a grasshopper, which I guess is where the name comes from.

Gropper - nice!

The call / song is called ‘reeling’ because it sounds a fishing reel ratchet clicking

Heard a grasshopper warbler on a few occasions, but only had fleeting glimpses, never a good view.

DT, there were LSW's in Clumber Park a few years ago, don't know if they are still breeding there though. This photo was from 2019 though. adriandaveybirdphotography.co.uk

I was at Rufford today ff, you should have waved. Ran the Robin Hood Way from Southwell to there, lots of birdsong but best spot for me was a Stonechat, I don't see them very often.
