Hi ,
It looks like you're using an ad blocker.

The revenue generated from the adverts on the site is a critical part of our funding - and it's because of these ads that I can offer the site for free. But using the site for free AND blocking the ads doesn't feel like a great thing to do, which is why this box is so large and inconvenient. Some sites will completely block your access, but I'm not doing that - I'm appealing to your good nature instead. Did you know that you can allow ads for specific sites, whilst still blocking them on others?

Thanks,
Ian Williams aka Fetch

Great photos! Really makes me think "What the hell are these birds doing here?!" They're one of those species which just seem so exotic and out of place here.

We all decided that they look very prehistoric.

Lovely HB. Apparently we have one down here on Stanpit Marsh at the moment. I was on a walk past there the other day but there was too much water so it wasn't to be seen.

Great walk around the Orme today, saw seals and pups, fulmars already taking up residence and a couple of stonechats.

Also mystery bird of prey, was hovering fairly high up, staying almost stationary, a lot less movement than a kestrel usually does though. Then it made a near vertical high speed dive from a great height with its wings seemingly tucked in and rounded at the front. I'm presuming kestrel, just a bit more spectacular than usual? Difficult to see colour as it was silhouetted.

Bonners, though Kestrels are the only bird of prey that truely hovers Peregrines can appear to hover by holding their position in the wind
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fxCyy7jdnSM
and the other characteristics you describe fit Peregrine behaviour?

One of the delights of winter is back on the feeders 😀 The family of Long-Tailed Tits have started visiting on a daily basis again. Six or seven paid a visit this morning.

Thanks FF, I've never seen one and not seen one reported on that side of the Orme. Would like to think it might have been and certainly fits in looking at the video. Unfortunately we're going back into lockdown, so won't be back round the Orme for a few weeks to check again

Our LTTs aren't back yet, but keep hoping I'll see them soon.

Just re-watched the video til the end, that landscape looks very similar to the Orme
