Hi ,
It looks like you're using an ad blocker.

The revenue generated from the adverts on the site is a critical part of our funding - and it's because of these ads that I can offer the site for free. But using the site for free AND blocking the ads doesn't feel like a great thing to do, which is why this box is so large and inconvenient. Some sites will completely block your access, but I'm not doing that - I'm appealing to your good nature instead. Did you know that you can allow ads for specific sites, whilst still blocking them on others?

Thanks,
Ian Williams aka Fetch

I had a cheeky wren this morning, also lots of sparrows investigating the wisteria over our window. They almost give the impression of being on the lookout for neat sites but it seems very early

The scope looks very similar to the one I picked up in March (SVBONY SV28 20-60x60 Waterproof BAK4 Zoom Telescope Spotting Scope) for about the same price from eBay. The same scope seems to appear with a variety of brand names (they seem to be mass produced in China and then branded by individual sellors). As an introduction to owning a scope and as a useful addition to my binos I've found it great. As J2R says don't expect a Zeiss but great value for money. The only note of caution I would make is that I found the tripod it came with too flimsy and ended up buying something a bit more heavy weight.

Thanks for the scope comments I appreciate for £25 each it will have limitations but I bought them for Xmas gifts for an 8 & 5 year old so they should suffice. :-)

Just been for a walk around the harbour and there are a few birders waiting/photographing a Velvet Scoter. No pics but I did get a glimpse as it briefly came out from under a pontoon.

Is it unusual to see an Egret in East Yorkshire? I've seen one over the past 6 weeks or so in some open fields with drainage ditches running through them.

Mikeup I saw my first egret on the East Yorkshire coast many years ago before they started coming into South Yorkshire

Little egret have become regular sightings in Airedale (Keighley area) and Wharfedale (below Ilkley mainly) in the last two to three years. There’s quite a lot of suitable habitat in both valleys. I’ve not heard of breeding but would think it’ll happen soon ( if it hasn’t already ;-) )

DT I don't know about round your patch but they are definitely breeding around the RSPB reserve at Fairburn Ings. I've also seen both Cattle and Great White Egrets there as well.

Velvet Scoter is a nice spot Adrian. I think I'd be out there testing the scopes! got to make sure they work 😉

I suspect they might have bred ff but it has been either unseen, or not shared around publicly. I’ve seen birds in both valleys and sightings are shared on Bradford borders’ blog regularly

Went for a 11 mile run up at the coast today, with loads of birds around but sadly no bins. Highlight was a great view of a female hen harrier flying back and forth over the marshes as we had a cup of tea at the car after finishing. But otherwise a big flock of lapwings, lots of curlews, redshanks, oodles of brent and pink-footed geese, a few stonechats and what I think was very likely a water rail flying over up at the coast, and inland loads of redwings, fieldfares, flocks of linnets and a couple of yellowhammers. Some small waders also flew over inland, not sure what they were - my initial thought was dunlin but not sure why they would be there.
