Nice big family/flocks of goldfinch and LTTs fluttering about the edgerows this morning. No sign of yesterday's herons though. Stupid, stupid, jeuvenile pheasents flying straight at me - I actually had to duck- and one straight into the side of a van - that was messy! |

J2R, you’re right. August is the time to see for instance juvenile wading birds on their first trip south after being born weeks ago in Northern Europe. Ten plus species shouldn’t be difficult with chance of species like little stint, ruff, curlew / green / wood sandpipers Two singing willow warbler on Penistone Hill this morning. Lots of mipit still on the hill. Heather stunning |

I've had a reply today from my MP in response to the letter sent about the Hen Harriers. (Saying the next bit in hope.....) Not seen any swifts today........ Although the duck is still quacking quite loudly! |

I won't hold my breath with my MP as he is definitely in the hunting set. Another wonderful stroll along the river, teeming with wildlife. Highlights tonight the large numbers of Little Egrets and Herons, a beautiful kestrel, redshanks and ridiculous numbers of curlew. All along the mud and in the fieldd |

Dunno about it being the worst time of year for bird watching. There are some great sightings at the bird observatories and in the right locations plenty of migrating passerines and waders turn up! I'm not seeing them because I'm not getting out there with my bins at the best hours of the day-- early-ish mornings. That's when I run! Eight Long Tailed Tits at fat balls in the garden and the first Blackbird sampling Rowan berries today. If the pattern of previous years repeats then the tree will be stripped bare within two weeks. |

It’s a good time of year for twitching, but I’m not convinced it’s as good for “proper” birding.
