I was in my garage, fixing a puncture, when there was a scuffling sound from just outside the door. Whatever had been there had obviously taken off down the side of the garage. I peered round the corner, just in time to see a gingery blur bounce into the undergrowth. I suppose it could have been a small fox, but the way it moved was exactly the same as the pine marten I saw from the kitchen window a few years ago.

The security light outside the garage has come on several times in the last few evenings so there’s definitely something that’s making visits after dusk.

Belated but well done DS1 on that teaching job.
Sparrowhawk chasing a Kingfisher, that's some rare chance to see.
I've not seen anything at all of note! Envious of most of you here on the thread!

It’s arguably the worst time of the year for birdwatching. One thing I’ve noticed though is the local titmice seem a bit more vocal than of late

We've still got the LTT family coming into the garden. Huge numbers of starlings, greenfinches and sparrows on the feeders, not much else gets a look in, amazed at how grave the LTTs are.

However, I'd agree with your point in general DT, went for a walk in the hills last night and at one point there wasnt a single sound, beautiful, but sad not to hear the bird song. A bit later still lots of swallows and housemartins though.

The river is the exception to the rule here, teeming with noisy wildlife

DT, last year I said the same about August to a friend who is a VERY serious birder and he told me (in the nicest possible way) that I was completely wrong, that this is a time of very interesting migrants. That is probably more of a Norfolk coast thing, though. And personally I'd rather have the singing and general hubbub of April-June than the off-chance of seeing some poor wee thing which has been blown off course.
