Just come back from a week's skiing in the Italian Alps. As usual, I didn't see that much while skiing (it's a pretty barren time of the year), just some snowfinches, a willow tit and black redstarts at village level. But as we were leaving yesterday, in a little town further down the valley, I was amazed to catch a glimpse of a hirundine in flight - in mid-February! I didn't get a good view but I believe it was probably a crag martin, from its size and overall brownness. Apparently some do overwinter in southern Europe, but I really wouldn't have expected them in the Alps at this time of year. Odd things are afoot with our climate...

HowFar?
This was on the bird feeder today. I think it's a redpoll, but I am not sure and I have no idea if it's a common or lesser one. Any help gratefully received.

HF I'd say Lesser. Common are far scarcer in the UK anyway but that looks like it has markings more consistent with a Lesser.

So the lesser is more common, and the common is rare? (in UK)

We went for a stroll along Ferring beach this morning. Is that an Oystercatcher in the middle of the picture?
I'm pretty sure the small birds by the waters edge are Dunlin.

The Scribbler
Hello, I’m just shuffling in as my new enthusiasm for photography has resulted in some bird sightings and I’d like to get better at identifying them.

Here’s a lesser redpoll from a recent visit to a nature reserve
