12barDavid--may as well add another to that bird group! Looks like a summer plumaged Black Headed Gull on the very far left. I've not seen one in sp yet this year.
Bit of nothing around my locality this last couple of weeks although Cetti's Warbler is getting closer and closer to home with one singing just 750 metres from my house early this week. (seem to be moving slowly, year by year west up river from Cardiff Bay).

Thanks again everyone for the information.

My birthdays coming up in early March, I'll ask my wife for a book on identifying British birds. When I was a youngster, I seem to remember having a copy of "The Observer Book of British Birds." Goodness knows where that is now.

David I have Britain's Birds by Hume, Still, Swash, Harrop and Tipling, Princeton Press that I got from the RSPB (they get a small cut from each copy) which I find an excellent guide. It uses good photos rather than the drawings that most guides used to use. It's worth having a look at.

I like that book too; definitely the best photographic guide I've seen. It's quite big to put in your pocket, though.

Rob Hume's " Birds of Britain and Europe" utilising drawings as well, first published in 2004 (RSPB) expands on a single photo and shows birds in various positions. I loved the Observer book which I had and used a long time ago!

The book I use is the RSPB handbook of British birds , you get 1 page per bird with a picture & some notes on identifying & where you usually find each species.

Yeah..I think that's the one I mean meadowsboy.
Despite the drizzle and wind a few songsters making themselves known this morning- Blackbird, Song Thrush, Robin, Dunnock, Greenfinch, Great Tit and the usual Cettis Warbler.

I have been trying to remove the ivy from the garden wall before the birds start to nest. There is one bit left that I couldn't get to until I'd cut down something else. I've been watching robin(s) flying in and out with nest-building materials. So now the ivy will have to stay for a while longer.
