Similar here this morning- no Jay but chaffinch, gold finch, blue and great tits. Also female mallard being gang raped!

Sparrowhawk and shelduck are my highlights of the week! Saw a dunnock today too. Do they get redder as part of breeding plumage? It may be my eyes, or a trick of the light but it seemed ruddier than usual.

Lots of birds look ‘smarter’ in breeding plumage - starling is a good example

Let's hope when Tony Juniper takes over at NE he will sort this out. On a happier note, I saw a group of 9 curlew today, and a couple of smaller groups of lapwing. The warm weather is bringing them all back. Oh, and skylarks singing like crazy. |

That's shocking, DT. NE and SNH appear to have been 'captured' by commercial interests and seem to have little interest in protecting nature any more. Early swallow reported at Portland Bird Observatory yesterday. |

Spent ages watching barn owl this evening - it saw me watching and diverted from its route back to the nest box and sat waiting on a greenhouse gutter until I'd hidden behind a bush Really hope there's a pair and we'll have a family to watch this year. Lots of bats out this evening too - doesn't feel like February. |
