Fleeting glances is a great description. You hear them usually rather than see them in your in woodland say

Kingfisher. On the Peak Forest canal. I kept hearing they were there 😁. That's me sorted for this week....

Singing dipper this morning, then ten mins later heard a chiffchaff too. I do a little dance when I hear the first chiffchaff of spring and thought it was appropriate to do one this morning too :):)

Beautiful sparrowhawk back in the garden again today. We definitely have a pair around if I'm understanding correctly. This one has a pronounced amount of red and brown on its neck and chest, so must be the male?

Size is a good indication too; males are smaller

From Scottish Wildlife:

There is quite a big difference in size between the tiercel and falcon. Tiercel in French means a third and therefore the male is a third smaller than the female. This size difference is common in all birds of prey and is called sexual dimorphism. It is even more acute in the peregrine falcon than any other falcon

I first came across the term tiercel in the brilliant book H is for Hawk

Yup, definitely smaller, thought it was a different bird until I checked my book. So I've also learnt that the previous visitor must've been a female.

Great run last night, plenty of redshank, curlew and little egrets around the river, turnstones around the harbour, cormorants on the beach and flocks of small waders flitting along the edge of the sea.

Small waders likely to be ringed plover and / dunlin - that run sounds ‘right up my street’

Cheers DT, dunlin sounds right looking at the behaviour, didn't see any ringed plover as I only see them when walking as they camouflage themselves really well amongst the stones.
