I saw a jay this morning, we used to get them all the time in our sth London/Surrey back garden. In 25 years here it's the first one I've seen
Skylarks were all up and very noisy in the sunshine Also seeing many skeins of geese flying over, the Canadas that overwinter (eating the winter wheat on the fields) providing Ralph with his morning entertainment, haven't arrived yet.

Fragile Do Not Bend
No sign of the jays we had last year but then the oaks around here were attacked by some sort of gall wasp this year which destroyed the acorns.

Nearly taken out by a low flying male sparrowhawk this morning, whilst having an al fresco wee in some particularly spiky shrubbery

They are shy, retiring woodland birds but say mid September to end October come out to organise stashes of accorns

I've been lucky and seen quite a few all year - Jan onwards. Often just fleeting glances though.
