Any luck DT? Goldfinches are abundant around me but I've never seen them visit my feeders, despite recently adding a niger seed feeder, until this morning when I peered out the bedroom window to be greeted by a pair scoffing sunflower hearts less than 6 feet away ![]() |

ff, goldfinches are supposed to like niger seeds but the ones we get in the garden distinctly prefer sunflower hearts (as does practically every species). Goldfinches are by far the commonest bird on our feeders, a situation which would have been unimaginable 20-30 years ago. DT, I hope your chiffchaff quest proved fruitful. Sharply cold again here today, so the chiffchaffs may be regretting their premature move north. |

CHIFFCHAFF spotted and heard. Just by the steam railway line too. Worth Valley excitement levels haven’t been so high since Jennifer Aguther whipped her drawers off following the land-slip ![]() Also heard: a magnificent song thrush singing from the top of a tree ![]() |

We have magnificent song thrushes too, but 'our' chiffchaff hasn't showed up yet. Come on little one, the sun is shining...

We hardly ever get song thrushes actually in the garden. But we very often get one singing, very loudly, high up in a tree in a neighbour's garden, late on in the evening after most of the other birds are tucked up in bed. It has a little of the nightingale feel to it.

Well done DT, finally got you chiffchaff 😀Not heard one here yet. Morning off work and a day off running, so had a lovely stroll around RSPB Conwy. No rarities, plenty of the usual waders and ducks. Highlight for me was a beautiful male bullfinch.
