Hi ,
It looks like you're using an ad blocker.

The revenue generated from the adverts on the site is a critical part of our funding - and it's because of these ads that I can offer the site for free. But using the site for free AND blocking the ads doesn't feel like a great thing to do, which is why this box is so large and inconvenient. Some sites will completely block your access, but I'm not doing that - I'm appealing to your good nature instead. Did you know that you can allow ads for specific sites, whilst still blocking them on others?

Thanks,
Ian Williams aka Fetch

Nice one Steve

We saw / heard mipit and skylark on Penistone Hill this morning and I’ve just seen a male kestrel through the front living room window :)

I finally got down to the river for a walk, couldn't go far as it was in full flood but I heard my first chiffchaffs. I also saw the swans, one on the nest, only just in the dry, with eggs. :)

I’m struggling to believe willow warbler still exist after my chiffchaff lasted one day, before apparently nipping home again. The idea of seeing a swift is about on a par with a patch unicorn

Chiffchaffs are indeed about. More today. Still feels like mid-March, though, in warbler terms. Fabulous red kite drifting overhead today, would have been mega-event in Norfolk even just a few years ago.

My son is just back from uni and days that there is talk of culling red kites as they are becoming a nuisance. Please tell me this isn't the case! If you have too many send a lot to Northern Ireland

Red kite cannot be killed or taken under the general licence so Natural England or Sottish Natural Heritage would have to grant a licence specifically. Unlikely, but not impossible with NE. There would uproar from groups like Raptor Persecution UK and if you have any firm knowledge I urge you to share it with them ( raptorpersecutionscotland.wordpress.com ).

No firm knowledge, just rumblings that their population has exploded in recent years. I imagine it will eventually stabilise with nest site and carrion availability anyhow.

I imagine it will be like buzzards here- 25 years ago I saw my first buzzard, now I see several each week. I wonder if that large population would make kite re population more difficult over in NI?
