First curlew calling in the fields below the moor today. The first I've heard this year. Quite a lot of lapwing, too.

Spring, despite the forecast!

That’s good, habitat nurturing paying off? life must be hard for small predators.

I accidentally spooked buzzard on the ground yesterday - a very close encounter, while exploring a quiet ruin on Portland. It’s just occurred to me that roadkill must have been a large part of the diet for all the buzzards & kites I used to see in Wiltshire. There’s hardly any here.

90 minutes walk around Penistone Hill near Haworth and barely a bird seen or heard. Even our Tuss couldn’t find much

There was a bigger flock of curlew in a farmer's field this morning. Maybe 30+ birds.

If they've come from the Solway, they may be going to regret it, if they've come from the east coast, maybe less so.

On an offroad run this morning, all I saw was red grouse, and mallard.

To complete the trinity* of returning waders, I heard a noisy oystercatcher fly past over the house this morning.

*OK, I'm ignoring the golden plovers which never seem to entirely leave us, and the common sandpipers which come from abroad, so don't count.
