We had the dogs with us and stopped to do something. I looked and there was handsome male in the tree tops. It won't be long before our wood warblers arrive now

Have had Swifts around this time in "early years" alpenrose so yours were quite likely. As for Mute Swan yeah..main breeding time is what you read but down here in warm South Wales , now and again they lay earlier! Not this year on my regular patch though. Great sightings for you bonners and what a superb selection of warblers kinky. No Reeds on my patch as this time last year. BBS survey yesterday was cold and quiet. Biggest obvious difference over recent years was the increase in Wren numbers.

Cheers Steve, my post today is about oddities. Just seen what to all intents and purposes looked like a fledgling blackbird, also it flew into its own reflection in the shed. Just seems a bit early.
River walk today and saw several large waders and also in flight, who completely match black Tailed Godwit in my Collins guide, especially when in flight. But according to the guide I'm in the wrong part of the country.
Last two walks I've also seen a large owl along the river, again looks and acts like a short eared owl, which would be fine if it was winter.
Anyway, posted on a local wildlife group in the hope someone more experienced will be able to confirm or tell me what I'm actually seeing.
Also, favourite sighting ob the river today was a wheatear pair who gave me a lovely long sighting.

Just had a reply from the local RSPB chap who reckons black Tailed Godwit is right as they are currently passing through

Decent day for sightings today - bittern (watched one, heard others booming), ring ouzel, bearded tits, mediterranean gulls, sandwich terns, wheatears, sand martins, avocets, marsh harriers, stonechat, plus lots, lots more. OK, I cheated there - not on a run, but a fab afternoon at Minsmere. What a place! But a biting icy wind as usual. There and Titchwell are the coldest places on Earth, I swear.

Standing on the beach at Titchwell in a hailstorm in January looking for snow buntings is the coldest I have EVER been. Didn't even find the bloomin' things!
