Great afternoon at Leighton Moss yesterday - lots of good spots including hundreds of sand martins, great white egret (with convenient nearby little egret for easy comparison) 2 garganey and *finally* actually seeing a bloomin' cetti's

Great White Egret....more than impressive. No such good spots for me and the wind is keeping small birds skulking.

....And hooray for your Cetti's Kinky! Dull looking birds aren't they?! Garganey a superb sighting.

If I had to vote for the bird which had the lowest ratio of times seen to times heard, it would go to the Cetti's. Even owls are more commonly seen, in the dark. Nightingale's obviously a contender but I think Cetti's beats it.

Yep....You're right J2R ! I guess there are quite a few birds heard rather than seen.....Cetti's being top but maybe also Reed Warbler, Cuckoo(!), Lesser Spotted Woodpecker, and more...

steve45, I actually see reed warblers reasonably often. They don't seem to skulk so deeply within the reeds as the Cettis do, and they perhaps move around more. Of course another contender for heard-but-not-seen is the bittern, another deep reed dweller, but that fails to get my vote because I don't hear it very often (whereas I hear a Cetti's most days, on my riverside run).
