steve45, it's great how quickly it all changes, too. I went for a run on March 14 and was listening out for chiffchaffs, didn't hear any. Next day went back to the same place and there were about 5 or 6 singing over a short stretch and lots more since. Also loads more blackcaps today than 3-4 days ago. I love the song of the blackcap, definitely one of the best.

What causes whitethroat crashes? They've been pretty abundant here in the last few years.

It's a very warblery route I run on most days (along the Yare Valley outside Norwich). I once heard 7 different warblers over a stretch of a mile or so - chiffchaff, blackcap, whitethroat, willow, Cetti's, garden and reed warblers. There are often sedge warblers as well, and last year I heard a grasshopper warbler a few times.

Fragile Do Not Bend
A pair of Egyptian geese with goslings in the local park last night, first time I've seen any in Kent. I had to tell my running group what they were.

The big Whitethroat crash in the late 1960's was caused by drought in the Sahel region of Africa, through which a lot of birds had always passed through.
Great warbling mix there J2R...no Whitethroats yet down here but a little early yet..I
Goldcrest singing in the garden as well as Blackcap today. And Coal Tit.
Nice to see earlyish goslings Fragile..I'm often amazed when I'm out and about with people that they are often oblivious to "what's out there"...so many people see the wild side of life only on the telly!

No swallows here yet, although a few sightings on local sites, so won't be too long now

My usual frustrations today trying to identify various ducks and waders on the river. The waders most frustrating as there are some that could fit several descriptions from the guide books, so really difficult to give good descriptions to help on here.

But, I'm hoping for help in duck identification. Were a pair I think. One very distinctive, black head, grey stripe down whole of upper body, to black smaller stripes either side. White rest of body. So, any ideas? Size was smaller than shelducks similar to mallard?

Sounds like an eider apart from the grey stripe down the whole of the upper body - the back of the head is grey on the male but I don't think it extends beyond. Makes an oooh sound like Frankie Howerd.
