'modern' cars are built not to be owner maintained other than fluids and filters, if your lucky. The more expensive the car the less the manufacturer would rather you delved beneath the bonnet.

I had a debate this morning with a colleague about whether to go to the main dealer to get wiper blades and screen wash fluid changed for 80 quid or whether to go to Halfords to do it for 40. Another colleague looked incredulous that we wouldn't do it ourselves. But we both agreed we'd pay the main dealer to do it. Useless with cars, me. :-) G

That's astounding. Really? I think I'm with your colleague here ... :-)

I admit there is a case for fitting decent wipers that the manufacturer recommends (ie. have nice Bosch ones rather than the cheapest that Halfords stock), but these are easily obtainable on t' Internet.

I think it is a reasonable compromise to go to Halfords HappyG

If I lived any nearer, I'd do your wipers and screenwash for £35 :-)

I'd do them for £20 😉

I change all those types of things myself apart from oil, I get that done on the service.

I know that the days when people did their own car maintenance are long gone, so I shouldn't be surprised, it's the way things are. And has been said already, a lot of modern cars are beyond the average home users capabilities nowadays - mine included.

One of the main reasons I only drive older cars, I prefer to do as much maintenance as possible, and the less computers to get in my way the better...

I'm not very mech minded, but I'd never dreamed of doing wiper blades and screenwash other than DIY!!

I did do brake pads once. On the basis that I'd spend the last 2 years fettling with my son's MTB so I had some basic appreciation of pistons, calipers and hydraulic fluid, I swapped (successfully) the pads on my Fiat Panda. It helped that the design was the easiest in the world to deal with, and whilst that first trip out and press on the brake pedal was a little nervous, it did all work out very straightforward - literally a 30 minute job for a newbie with no prior experience.

I suspect we are all more than capable of an oil change or similar if it goes right. It's if it goes wrong that you're scuppered if you're at home (e.g strip a bolt, bolt won't shift, etc etc). A bit like childbirth I reckon - my wife would have loved to have been at home, but on the basis a) she might die and b) my child might die (both highly unlikely!) I wouldn't even consider a home birth!!

Just the Bosch wiper blades are £60 for my car. So £80 fitted is actually not bad. :-) GG
