Sorry not clear - the western end is tarmac to the point it leaves the path up to Seathwaite Tarn.

I've happily taken my Grand Espace to the Coniston end car park. No problems, but it is single track. How much wider is a campervan? And the web seems to say it's now Pay & Display. Whn I last went, it was free. I wonder if they've improved the car park surface? |

Walked up to the car park from Coniston. Very steep at the start but should be ok.

um, they hadn't improved the surface last time I was there. They just saw an opportunity to extract some more cash from the tourists. Although given how much damage the volume and some of the unthoughtful parking is causing to the area, then maybe charging and policing it is a good thing. |

Coniston Old Man, Dow Crag, Buck Pike & Brown Pike. Nice circular wee walk.

I got there early, but on the return the car park was carnage, cars dumped everywhere.

Looks like I might get a job up north next year from April. I’ve signed up for GL3D weekend but should be able to even make one night a midweek on the fells. I probably need to go home down south occasionally to let my family know I exist. Very excited.

Hmmm - "Signs to warn of 'treacherous' Scafell Pike blackspot" - bbc.com - thoughts? Mixed feelings here - on the one hand, I struggle to argue against proportionate measures to help people avoid putting themselves and others in danger but, on the other, I can't say I'm a fan of man made additions to the mountain environment. For now, I'm going to steer well clear of discussions about slippery slopes and thin ends of wedges. |

Very similar to you Andy. I dislike the idea of adding more junk to the natural beauty, and my first reaction is that people should take personal responsibility for their own safety. But... when they clearly can't and are endangering themselves, and possibly of more concern, all the rescue teams too, are some discrete preventative measure the lesser of the two evils? Hmmm...

I can't disagree with something that Wasdale MRT were involved in deciding on. but, I wonder about the precedent. what would happen if someone were then hurt on an unsigned 'dangerous' route and a litigious "victim" and lawyer were involved |
