If you want contemporary guides to the bulk of the Wainwrights, then the Cicerone guides have no equal. Mark Richards was a pal of Wainwright and took all the best bits for his books.

If you want a free list, there's always this website. It's a hill database for the entire UK, but there are sections to monitor the likes of Wainwrights only.

If you are buying Wainwrights to use as walking guides, I would strongly recommend that you invest in the “Walkers Edition” with updates by Clive Hutchby.

You won’t get them for the same bargain price as the box sets, but they are a really sound update of Wainwright’s original guides, which have, inevitably, become a little outdated in places.

And a second recommendation for NE’s favoured Fellranger series by Mark Richards. They are very good and I tend to pack the Fellranger and the Wainwright for a day out and use them in tandem with each other.

I'm going up to the Lakes in October staying in a hotel in the Ambleside area. Bought '50 Walks in the Lake District' and have started planning. I had booked an abseil, but being only one person, they cancelled the booking and said I should phone back neater the time to see if they could fit me in with another group.
