Today we managed to get out onto the Fells to make the most of some glorious sunshine before storm Ciara’s projected arrival tomorrow. But even today, despite the unruffled surface of Lake Windermere, the mountain forecast warned of gusts of 50 mph or more and -12 degrees of wind-chill on the tops. So we decided on easy route that scarcely touched 600m. From Hartsop we ascended above Hayeswater to the shoulder of the Knott and thence northeast via Angle Tarn to Boredale Hause before heading back to Hartsop.
The ascent above Hayeswater was great. The sun shone and the breeze was only moderate. Views across to Helvellyn and Fairfield were spectacular. However above 500m the breeze rapidly strengthen to a gale. On the ridge above Satura Crag I am sure the gusts easily exceeded 50 mph. We could only remain on our feet with the help of our walking poles. The effort to remain upright precluded paying much attention to the mountain skyline to the west. By Angle Tarn we were again sufficiently sheltered to focus again on the Helvellyn range, St Sunday Crag and the peaks of the western arm of the Fairfield Horseshoe. There was not much snow in sight, apart from the pack on Helvellyn’s summit and an attractive series of patches of snow that delineated Striding Edge against the background of Catstye Cam.

Oops, I was a bit careless about orientation in that description. Of course, we headed northwest from the Knott to Boredale Hause and looked westwards to the eastern limb of the Fairfield Horsehoe. It was nonetheless both delightlful and surprisingly challenging.

eL Bee!
A friend of mine travelled up so that he could ride his FatBike at Whinlatter. Perfect conditions and we finished before the wind started to pick up. Talk about hitting a window of opportunity!

I think I hit that window of opportunity too. FGR leg 1 today with pal Victoria, down to Carl Side Tarn off Skiddaw, an out and back to Ullock Pike then down to Bassenthwaite via White Stones and Dodd car park. Back to Keswick via Millbeck and RoWs, about 15.5 miles. Conditions serious on top of Skiddaw, but manageable.

Don’t you just hate that V’rap. I spent all of yesterday regretting agreeing to do an extra day in work.

Canute those views would have been beautiful today. Good route choice even if it was a bit too exhilarating in the gale.
