I think we're stuck with oil, the gas pipeline doesn't reach our village. Saying that, I'm quite happy with oil - the system seems to be quite efficient, certainly our fuel bills are lower overall since we moved

Oil price varies massively NE, just FYI. Tends to track crude oil / kerosene market prices. In 6 yrs it's been as low as 39p per litre as high as 99p for us. Massive variation. Of course you can just budget for it, but our 1200 litre tank can be between £400 and over £1000!

Convinced another colleague to look at solar + battery today. Bizarrely he said no smart meter in his area - suburbia, about 1 mile from Scottish and Southern Energy's HQ!

Ooh, TR did a fab blog on Air Source Heat Pump - air not water heating. This is better for older, less well insulated properties esp with solar and battery. Thanks TR. :-) G

HG - yes, I've seen that already. We also have a 1200 litre tank and when we moved here bought 1000 litres @ 54p, then we recently did a "Winter top-up" @ 73p.

We have a local Oil Club and of course there's companies like Boiler Juice.

I'd agree with that, Boiler Juice seem to be about 3 - 4p per litre more expensive. Carrs Billington round here.

We have Carrs Billington as our feed and supplies store, didn't know they did oil. May enquire as Gleaner have just notified me that they are pulling out of domestic kerosene supply! :-) G

Its easier to be frugal with the oil - the fear of it running out - especially once you’ve done that in the middle of an especially cold snap- tends to concentrate the mind on keeping the thermostat quite low.
Just had ours topped up for the winter at ~72p (boilerjuice)

We need to look into getting a new tank soon. We've got a single-skinned tank which is showing signs of light cracking at the top.

Anyone know if that's fine to leave for a bit or urgent to replace?

I had the excitement of replacing the transmitter battery for the sensor that measures the oil level and sends to Watchman. Annoyed that I couldn't just replace batteries but had to replace whole "tube".

We saved loads of oil last winter by having a broken boiler! Brrr. snow :-) G

We’ve had word from our energy company that our direct debit from April onwards will be double the current amount. How’s everyone else fared?
