Eilish McColgan posted a tweet in favour; calibration an issue though! I suppose given loads of people "know" the can run at speed X on a treadmill, seeing elites running at speed XXXX might help them comprehend the gap to elites.

I mean the times should convey that already and presumably anyone that already runs on a treadmill knows distance and time not just speed.

Maybe those that don't really run might decide to test themselves on a treadmill though.

One issue is that treadmills aren't always well-calibrated. They are also generally quicker than running outdoors which may mislead people. Eg if mid-ranking athletes produce world-beating times.

I don't think most people know the difference few mph or kmh can make to overall time and / or the challenge that running at that higher speed would present

Calibration is going to be a big issue.

In rowing, many years ago Concept2 managed to pull it off successfully with a self-calibrating machine that does some fancy calculations based on the air resistance of the flywheel. Still probably the gold standard of "eSport".

And in cycling, although modern powermeters are good to ±1%, for the finals of the Zwift world champs the finalists each got a personally shipped and calibrated smart trainer. [Not to mention the strict weigh in/height protocols!]

I suspect that if they do a "zwift academy" style comp, then the early stages wouldn't matter too much with calibration issues. But the further a comp progresses, the more this is absolutely important.

Opportunity for one treadmill brand though to sponsor the event, get their devices used for important "rounds" etc.

Watched it on the world athletics site. Got to say I was impressed with the finish line coverage. A pleasant change seeing a lot of the top finishers rather than solely focusing on the winner doing his victory lap.

At first I was thinking wow what a lot of really fast times but I guess now with the shoes it’s quite normal. Not that I’m saying it’s easy or it’s just the shoes btw!!

2:02:05. Great marathon debut by Sabastian Sawe.
He has PB's of 26:49 and 58:05 so it didn't come out of the blue.
I don't think he will threaten Kiptum's WR though, he's not a youngster at 29.
