It’s interesting as before the race he was asked what his threshold was and he said 21km/hr!

Actually doing threshold for an hour is often harder than determining what your threshold is :-)

Yep, he does lots of threshold training so it makes sense he thinks HM would suit him but racing at that level for an hour is tough. Long continuous session at threshold are tough and taxing which is why most of his threshold stuff is in intervals

Yeah, but that figure was his own estimate of what he thought his threshold was.

I do think he'd have probably got on ok if he'd gone out at 60 pace. I literally turned on as they hit 10km so didn't see how they got there but I read/ heard he thought they started easier than planned initially then picked up so seems he got sucked in to the faster pace.

Given Ingebrigtsen training, I think he knows his threshold 100% but also I wouldn't be surprised if he just said 21km as ball park as clearly whatever he said would be calculated as a race time.

Don’t know SPR. The interviewer asked him what he’d prefer - it was something like choosing between winning in 59:59 or losing in 58:XX. And he replied something along the lines of ‘either would be nice’ (that’s all paraphrasing). Just from that I think he was expecting better, but looking back it’s also quite clear one of the commentators felt he was struggling prior to 10K, saying he felt the athlete was breathing heavily at that early stage.

I’ll try and dig it out, but it was one of the main interviews he did before the event.

It's worth noting that "threshold" is a slightly woolly definition anyway. A specified lactate level or VO2 uptake estimated through lab testing may simply not be something that a given athlete can sustain for an hour whatever the intentions of the testing is.

It's not like he would ever have run 21km in an hour as a training piece.

His comment was probably just him being a bit of a smart alec anyway.
