The stop-start technology for petrol has really come on in recent years. Back in the late eighties it was a bit of a fad in VWs. But I welcome the saving fuel/saving the planet feature nowadays.

Finding the BBC reporting of this confusing (obviously I'm an EV fanboi, confessed, but I think I can still read facts dispassionately and logically, despite that). bbc.co.uk EV car sales and proportion of sales are increasing. It's only that UK electric car production is reducing because European models are struggling with competition with China and row with UK gov't about manufacturing targets. But the headline makes it sound like "People Don't Want EVs" which I don't think is true. Maybe one for environment / Politics thread, sorry if so. ![]() |

It's sounds a complete muddle, but as much as anything it's the law of unintended consequences at work!

UK and US traditional car manufacturers (except Tesla) are not that great at EV. China and Tesla are. Loads of misinformation on EVs as well, but generally folk just don't like change then they latch into noisy false facts to support their position. (Same with climate change sceptics). |

A great read in today's weekend FT about the stalled EV revolution. Summarising: - EU/US put in significant incentives to population and car makers. It created an artificial growth/demand to some degree and now these incentives are starting to be pulled back, there is a consequential demand lull. - car makers say this is removal of incentives is premature as populations have not yet fully bought into EVs. Usual reasons stated here. High upfront costs, infrastructure, range anxiety, range anxiety. - meanwhile China had a statewide project 20 years ago to electrify car industry and it's now bearing fruit. 50% of car sales in China are EV and they have price parity with ICE. They knew they could not compete with the west on ICE so they stole a march on EVs. The China EV strategy is completely end to end and integrated (supply chain, batteries the lot are sewn up). But it's not just state control. china EV makers undertaking significant R&D. - But it's not all doom and gloom for Europe. A raft of E25k price point cars are expected to com on the market 2025 in Europe. Also surveys show that the vast majority of those switching to EV stick. The vase economics of it being cheaper in the long run remain and prices for batteries will fall (even if we have to rely on China for that). |

There should be no government incentives for private transport. They’ve put up bus fares 50%, so private cars should have a similarly increase in tax / duty and yes that should include electric cars |

Bus fares are capped. The cost in funding of that cap is provided by government, so increasing the cap is reducing what is an already very heavily subsidised service (if no cap then £3 bus service could rise to £10 in more rural locations) West midlands alone subsidises buses up to £70m. EV incentives are theren to help create a market and a demand and they'll come down as that market is created (same as government guaranteeing a price for renewables generates electricity I don't think its a fair or easy comparison you make there fields. |

Yep - the government didn't increase fares by 50%, they extended the subsidy but at a reduced rate.
