(ok I exaggerate, but certainly significantly more expensive in my case comparing our mid-sized EV car to our previous diesel van)

jda wrote: "but still half the cost of petrol diesel on average" Nope, it's more like double. Think we're talking at cross purposes jda - run costs. Electricity cost per mile vs. petrol/diesel cost per mile. I'm giving "half" as a rule of thumb. Highest electricity cost is about same as petrol diesel (on motorway very fast chargers). Cheapest end is free (solar at home), then cheap rate at night £0.02 per mile etc. G |

So you are talking purchase price jda? If so, then yes, I agree, 30% to 100% higher purchase cost.

No, I'm talking cost of commercial charging. It's basically 80p everywhere south of the border. At least that's my experience.

Even at 80p per kWh, that is roughly 20p per mile. Even at 40mpg, petrol/diesel at £1.50 that's 19p per mile, so about the same, like I said? Which I accepted. I *never* have to use that and I would hope most people, with most usage (other than work drivers whose mileage is paid by the company) would have to charge in that way. Same way that I wouldn't normally have filled my car up at motorway service stations (10% more expensive for fuel than supermarkets?) But even more so, obviously with electric charging! G |

Yes, *if* you have to drive exclusively on motorway, then the same. On average (i.e. assuming that average means NOT exclusively driving on motorway), then half. And low, e.g. if you can charge solely at home or even zero! So "average" was the middle one?! Not sure where our difference in understanding is coming in. Or are we going to start using definitions of "average" - median, versus mean, versus mode?! G |

The context was commercial charging for people who can't easily charge at home. I don't believe that people relying on commercial charging will average 40p per unit in England. I have just had another look at zap map and there are some out of the way slow (7kW) chargers going at 62p around me, but they will be awkward to use for many (and additionally incur parking fees for some of them).

Are we just very lucky up here then? Most of the Chargeplace Scotland 50kW chargers are between 20p and 40p per kWh. Yes, also penalties for extended stay at charger. And there are 22kW or slower chargers that are cheaper too? G
