Silly question...

Do we have to wait for social care to pull their fingers out, or can we just contact care homes directly?

Mum won't qualify for any financial assistance, so I don't see why we can't just crack on and start viewing places to find one that will suit.

Crack on and sort it yourself @cackleberry if that’s the situation you’re in. In our experience you’re very much on your own at this point!

Yup. If there's no way the council have to contribute you are outside the system and can choose where you like on whatever criteria are appropriate.

Also: After someone dies, if their home insurance was only in their name, sadly the cover becomes void. But if the policy was in joint names, it will still cover the surviving policyholder (though the names on the policy will need to be updated).

Pension Credit. The rules are a bit complex but if your elderly relative has some sort of disability (in this case dementia/Alzheimer's) and go into a home, they may be able to claim pension credit. So if carers allowance stops, it seems pension credit can start. It can also be backdated.
