My dads downstairs living room and hall carpet are a mess but it never put any buyer off as they where only interested in the bricks and mortar and are ripping everything out anyway.

Agree with LMH - what a prat

My 80 year old dad is currently visiting us and other than being tired after the journey took twice as long as it should have, he is on good form. He is getting a bit forgetful but not much else.

He seems to be enjoying life, and has a good group of friends in Winchester, long may it last

Fair chance any buyer is gonnae rip out a carpet old or new tbh. I’d take my chances and leave it be.

Good news here...MIL's house is sold. Estate agent will be taking paperwork to MIL to sign, then it's all down to the lawyers doing the transfer of docs, etc, so will complete on 31 January. [God knows why it takes so long but such is life and that's how they do things in Canada.]

We accepted their offer last week, but there were a few things to worry about...mortgage, and their inspection. The family went over and had a look at the house...a youngish lady is buying it as her first home. Her grandmother is a friend of MIL's so MIL is quite happy she's buying the house, as they have met in the past.

We're just happy to have sold it before we had to reinsure it as vacant, which was going to cost a small fortune. Our hard date for selling was July next year, but fortunately it hasn't come to that. :)

I thought I'd start a thread, as lots of us have elderly folks that we worry about/care for.

Also: After someone dies, if their home insurance was only in their name, sadly the cover becomes void. But if the policy was in joint names, it will still cover the surviving policyholder (though the names on the policy will need to be updated).

Pension Credit. The rules are a bit complex but if your elderly relative has some sort of disability (in this case dementia/Alzheimer's) and go into a home, they may be able to claim pension credit. So if carers allowance stops, it seems pension credit can start. It can also be backdated.
