It’s a shame and sad to see but you wish they would go to sleep for one last time. Big hugs Dio

My grandparents had a ceilidh for their 60th anniversary and my uncle arranged a telegram from the queen.

Although my grandfather was blind he managed away with no trouble to 95 and I think my granny got to 87 and again needed no help. That’s the way it should be in old age.

Well, we're back from the 60th anniversary shindig.

It was rather hard work. I spent a lot of time trying to keep FiL entertained or distracted. We had our lunch and then went for a short drive to do a walk alongside a local lake. They were both incredibly doddery. We had to cut the walk short. Having not seen them for a while, they have both declined quite a bit.

Back at the house for tea and cake - Liebling had made a sponge cake for all nine of us. Did everyone want a piece? Yes, everyone does. Great. To me fell the duty of cutting the cake. I cut it into nine pieces, pretty bloody expertly I don't mind saying. And then Liebling's mum had a ... well, sort of a temper tantrum. I wasn't sure why she was so upset at first but she was angry because there wouldn't be a piece left over. Apparently this was so FiL could have another piece later. Of course she waited until the cake was cut before saying this and then said, 'well, I won't have any then' in the manner of a stroppy eight-year-old.

'I don't eat cake anyway,' she added, 'or sugar' which almost provoked guffaws. They've got two more sponge cakes from Sainsbury's in the fridge and she'd just necked a giant portion of trifle and had seconds of that.

FiL looked very tired at the end - I don't think he can handle so many people, i.e. seven guests: the four offspring and three spouses. Very glad none of the grandchildren went.

Well done for getting through it, McG - my cortisol levels are rising just reading about the cake-cutting tantrum.

More hugs, Dio - and what TeeBee said.

I thought I'd start a thread, as lots of us have elderly folks that we worry about/care for.

Also: After someone dies, if their home insurance was only in their name, sadly the cover becomes void. But if the policy was in joint names, it will still cover the surviving policyholder (though the names on the policy will need to be updated).

Pension Credit. The rules are a bit complex but if your elderly relative has some sort of disability (in this case dementia/Alzheimer's) and go into a home, they may be able to claim pension credit. So if carers allowance stops, it seems pension credit can start. It can also be backdated.
