Well, I'd initially hoped for 3.30ish, but I've had a bit of an achilles niggle the last few weeks so I'm going to take it easy and see how it goes. If it eases off after a few miles, I may try and go for that time. But at the very least I'd like to finish under four hours.

Saw them laying out the halfway timing mat as I left my brother's. On the bus up now (free WiFi!). Good luck everyone. |

Well done everyone who was running today, it was very warm and muggy out there, was kinda hoping for a wee bit of drizzly rain at points!

Man, I found that really, really hard and it was the worst race I have EVER ran, and the first time I've ever had to walk! I don't really know what went wrong, but it was a multitude of contributing factors, the first being the blazing heat which probably started the collapse of everything else! I came out the blocks at PB pace (8min/miles) but even by mile two I could feel how hot it was and felt that pace would be unsustainable. And so it proved from mile 10 with the pace dropping significantly, and from mile 14 being replaced entirely by run/walking. My Achilles held out I'm glad to say, but was on the verge of full on cramps at points. The rest of my legs were screaming in discomfort and my feet weren't too happy either. I finished in a bit unrespectable 4.24 which was way off my target of 3.30 and even beyond the four hour mark which I thought would be the slowest I would complete a marathon. With the benefit of hindsight I suppose I enjoyed the day, but at the time I hated every minute of it! It's very difficult to motivate yourself when you're done in at mile 11 and think you still have 15 miles to go! I'm unsure if I'll ever enter another marathon. It's an awful lot of time, commitment, and effort for not a lot of reward. |
