Perfect Organism
Just entered the 2017 Edinburgh marathon so I thought I'd set up a forum for it so we can take through the highs and lows. This will be my fourth marathon. For some reason I have it in my head that I'll do ten and then leave it at that so I'm getting there.

Just entered too - this will be my first marathon. I haven't done a run further than 14miles yet, so it feels like a long way to go, literally and figuratively!

Hello AJLB! Congrats on your first marathon entry! It's a challenge but the satisfaction that comes from crossing that finish line is hard to beat! Do you have a time in mind, or just looking to finish?

Thanks! Time is the big question - I've only just been running for a year, but I can run a 1.28 half distance in training, and sub 18 at the local parkrun, so I'm wondering if sub 3 is realistic.... How about your target?

This will be my 3rd Edinburgh marathon and my 9th marathon in total. Looking to go under 3:30 for the first time.

WOW AJLB! Those are very impressive times indeed. To run a sub 90min half is excpetional, but to do it in training I think is something else! Sub 3 is definitely within your powers.
Hi purephase (cool name). I'm looking to go under 3.30 for the first time as well. I'm fairly confident I can do it. However, I ran Berlin a few years back and was on track until about mile 18 when I just hit the wall and lost a lot of pace. Ended up with 3.36 I think. What I learned from that experience is that in a marathon, sometimes there is just no more to give. At that stage, all I could do was put one foot in front of the other, and that was a struggle. Hopefully that won't happen this time round.

Cheers Festive Organism. That half time was a nice cool December day - I'm guessing the end of May might be a little warmer (!) - on the other hand I'd hope to progress a bit in training before then. Now weighing up the options of different training plans... Anyone got any recommendations?

AJLB, the end of May in Edinburgh can be anything from blizzards to heatwave, and probably several of them in a single day....
There is a specific thread on here for sub-3 marathon; you'd probably be well advised to ask there for advice on a training plan suitable to your pace. Edinburgh is possibly the flattest marathon in Britain, so if you're capable of a fast finish, it's a good place to try for it.

Thanks Duchess - I'll seek the wisdom of that thread! And Happy New Year everyone - suddenly the marathon seems a lot closer!
