I think one of the reasons that it isn't in Edinburgh for over 4/5's of the race is that the city has a hysterical fit when it holds only a 10k and chaos flows through the streets. holding a marathon within the city limits would be hazadous to your health.

I'm with Enriak on the route reasoning - Edinburgers are just big hissy fitters if there's mention of road closure. Even the ones that close to get out to East Lothian cause big intakes of breath at work when folk are trying to work them out. FFS walk/cycle/ run a bit to where you *need* to be.
As am in London I'm no sure so going to leave it till last minute to enter or do the half instead. Especially as I'm doing Etape Caledonia two weeks before.
It was my 1st mara in 2008 where I managed sub 4 an will alway be in my I never noticed any issues that year an I was one of the lucky ones oblivious to the water issues the year after but maybe my pregnant hormonal glow overruled any negativity for me :-s. I did the half 2010 as only few months post baby an missed last years half due to a bit of an injury but mainly only a week after the Etape.
As for the course - yes it's net downhill an point to point but unlike Boston an others mentioned the Edinburgh marathon actually 'legal'. It's the mixed sex pacemakers you have to worry about ;). The downhill rule is 1m per 1000 of race distance so limit of 42m an Edinburgh is I think 40m. The finish has to be within 50% of race distance from the start - sure it's a fair bit less than ten directly.
See you in May
