A new-build on your own land is surely a dream come true! I would go for a German prefab house with a fully usable cellar.

As per @Ocelot Spleens on the prev page - we've had to put our moving plans on a bit of a backburner. If we skipped off now, we would feel like we were leaving Liebling's three siblings in the lurch a bit with care of the Aged Ps. Currently, care is shared between the four of them and it works quite well like that.

I should add - we don't expect the surviving Aged P to come live with us - though I wouldn't rule it out. However, our eldest will be finishing his PhD in the Summer and might well need a place to stay for a bit so we can't really downsize at the min with that concern as well.

That's what I meant. It's a nice idea to think we can go wherever we like. Financially, and size wise we can. Except, my dad is 93, my older brother is covering that currently, but he is 65 and his health is now not great, younger brother much worse. OH sister and brother are near OH's mum, sister is basically useless and in effect passed her child off to be parented. Older Brother is much better but has teenage children. So we can go anywhere BUT we might not be able to go too far. |

Well I put off going to NZ (my wife's nationality) for 10 years as son and then grandson grew up. Sister had been out of country for 10 years, so if we did leave it would be her go! Seriously though, I wouldn't feel guilty if I left my mum for her last few years, with only visits to see her. Can't put one's life on hold. I'm sure she wouldn't expect me to. But yes, self build on own property is first to investigate. ![]() |

same situation here, Ideally we want to find a project bungalow and live in the van on the drive whilst making it energy efficient and ours - we've found the odd one that would be ideal - but we both have mums in their mid 80s and then there are the boomerang offspring... Will probably be too old to do anything other than move into a McArthy Stone by the time we get to escape ![]() |

Although the thought of a different house somewhere else goes through my mind, I think we are too attached to Edinburgh to move anywhere else. Also, part of the allure of retirement is being able to enjoy the garden we have. If we were to downsize I think that would be in later years |

We're also still prioritising an ancestor of advanced years and the diminishing possibility of boomerang offspring.

No rush for us but it's definitely on the agenda at some point. Previous occupants of our current house were 90 and it was too much for them at that point, I don't want to get to that stage. Also from seeing our older generation rattle around in houses they struggle to cope with. Got a rightmove alert for the area, which we like for a number of reasons, climate aside. |

It feels as though you chase your way up the housing ladder, and no sooner have you got what you thought you wanted, then it is time to come back down the ladder again. We bought a 5 bed because it was just as cheap as a 4 bed, not really because we needed the extra space. Now looking at smaller there doesn’t seem to be a huge saving in moving to a three bed. And bungalows in the area are vastly over priced and pretty grotty inside. Plus we can’t decide where to move to. Can see us rattling around in this house for a few years yet while we try to make a decision |
